Education and Training for the
Lightning Protection Industry.
The Lightning Protection University (LPU) offers online and in person training to meet the needs of individuals and organizations in multiple industries. Individuals preparing for certification can use the LPU online courses to prepare for the examinations. Architects, engineers, and other design build experts can learn the basics as well as dive into two and three-day courses to prepare for industry certifications.
Recently, the LPU acquired the National Lightning Safety Institute (NLSI). For over 15 years, NLSI provided lightning protection training to the military, expert witness services, and general safety guidelines.
From Beginner to Advanced.
Self-paced courses and webinars can provide a baseline understanding of lightning protection systems for those who are just curious or individuals who are engaged in industries that benefit from this knowledge: architects, engineers, facility management, building enclosure/roofing consultants, insurance professionals and more. The LPU’s in person training range from 1 day to 3-day intense workshops that focus on advanced training for engineers and military.
Traditionally, studying for certification meant finding a manual and reading the lifeless pages. LPU offers courses that bring the material to life through video and animation to provide you an alternative learning method. All courses, webinars, and workshops are developed by industry experts who have worked in the field and who have been certified in the Lightning Protection industry. Their experience and knowledge ensure the highest quality of information and industry perspective.

Assessment
A simple assessment can be done by anyone. It’s the first step in the process to protecting yourself from the damage of lightning.
If you are conducting assessments for new buildings, existing structures, or for insurance evaluations,
we recommend that you take the LPU Introductory course that provides and overview of the lightning protection process and key components.
Want to Calculate Your Risk to a Lightning Strike?
The LPU created a risk assessment calculator that utilizes the simple risk assessment found in the NFPA 780.
This tool uses multiple variables to calculate your structure's risk level for a lightning strike.
At completion of the calculation, a PDF is generated for your records.
If your assessment reveals that you are in a moderate to high-risk situation, the best solution
is to enlist a certified lightning protection contractor to assist you in evaluating the next steps in a
lightning protection system to ensure the safest methods. We recommend that you contact the
Lightning Protection Institute, where you can find certified lightning protection contractors in your
region. Find a certified local contractor here.
