The LPU carries on the legacy of the NLSI to provide training to the military and engineering communities.

Teach. Consult. Research.
Rich Kithil founded the National Lightning Safety Institute (NLSI) in 1998 to promote lightning safety and to ensure that people and structures were properly protected from a lightning strike. His passion for people to understand lightning and the proper ways to stay safe can be seen in his research, messaging and decades of consulting within the military as well as other industries.
Unfortunately, during Covid, he was hospitalized and became severely ill. During that time, NLSI stopped operating. Upon his recovery, he chose to find an alternative way for the NLSI’s mission to stay alive. Discussions began with the LPU about the possibility of using his years of military work within the LPU platform. In March of 2024, Rich enabled the LPU to acquire NLSI. The Lightning Protection University is honored to carry on Rich Kithil’s legacy of promoting and teaching lightning safety.
Courses
The NLSI, a division of the LPU, provides education and training for military personnel and engineers. Courses prepare individuals to properly design, install and maintain lightning protection systems. Each course will provide individuals with Certificates of Completion. For appropriate certification, individuals should take the Lightning Protection Institute’s Certification tests: Journeyman, Master Installer, and Master Installer Designer.
